Bates Motel
(Edvard Hopper, 1925) (Line oil on canvas)

From the category PARAPHRASES
This Victorian house is the fatal domicile of the family of Norman Bates and for this reason I was fascinated and make a paraphrase. However, Hoppers painting is not so dark and the house is sunny, just a summer day. Paraphrasing this landscape, I wish increase the dramatic effect of the sky under a sunny hour before a tempest or a tornado. To obtain this effect, i replace the light underground (whit canvas ground of the original). I prepare a reddish ochre sky before I applied the several layers of Prussian and cobalt blue of the sky, beyond the house. I use a darker colour mixing raw umbra and Prussian blue for the shadows.
